Vacancies for Examination Invigilators.

Posted: 4th November 2006

We are always interested to hear from Old Kingsburians, or their partners, who might be interested in joining our team of Invigilators for external examinations.  Invigilators are especially needed during May and June, the main period of GCE and GCSE exams, but also at other times throughout the school year (especially in January).

Invigilators work under the direction of the Examination Officers at school to make sure that the examinations run smoothly and that all exam regulations are implemented.

Invigilators need to enjoy working as part of a team and to relate calmly and supportively to young people.  Discretion, initiative, accuracy, a methodical approach, a sense of humour, a smart appearance and a comfortable pair of (quiet!) shoes are all characteristics of the successful invigilator.

Don’t worry if you have not invigilated before: training and support is always offered to invigilators.  The rate of pay is currently £7.50 per hour.  Invigilators are required to go through the CRB Disclosure procedure.

If you would like to discuss the possibility of becoming an invigilator you can contact the Exams Department in the first instance by:

Email:             exams@kingsbury.brent.sch.uk

Old Scholars’ Day – Saturday 16th July 2005.

Posted: 28th February 2005

This year KHS is celebrating its 80th Anniversary. Why don’t you come along and make this special occasion a really great day.

For those of you who would like to test your skills against the staff, there will be a cricket match during the afternoon. If you prefer however, you could always come and relax, watch the play and enjoy the sunshine!

You may wish to take a trip down memory lane ~ tours of the School can be arranged.  It would also be an opportunity to see some of the exciting new developments.  Easter will see the completion of a completely new roof to the main School building.

In the evening we shall be holding the Old Scholars’ Dinner. This is always a pleasant evening with an opportunity to meet up with old friends and enjoy an excellent dinner to complete the day. Why not come and join us and perhaps invite some friends and make up a table.

For further information please contact John Winter on (020) 8206 3020.

Kingsbury High School Raise £10,000 for the Tsunami Appeal.

Posted: 3rd February 2005

The pupils of KHS returned to school in January deeply moved by the plight of so much suffering after the Tsunami tragedy.  A groundswell of pupils wanting to take action culminated in an emergency Junior School Council meeting where class representatives brought forward fund raising and crisis relief ideas.  The pupils rejected a non-uniform day saying it was too easy and that it would not bring home the seriousness of the plight of the suffering of others.  They wanted to do something practical!  As they couldn’t fly out to help the victims the next best idea they could think of was to raise funds by doing things for others at home.  Out of this simple idea came ‘My Tsunami Note’

Each pupil took a sponsor form home and worked for family, friends, neighbours and the local community.  Their target was to raise enough money to fix a bank note to their sponsor form which would end up being displayed in the school hall.  From cleaning to gardening, from babysitting to helping elderly relatives, the enthusiastic pupils worked for anyone who would help their sponsor cause.  The school anticipated the majority might raise a £5.00 note but never dreamed that more than half would raise double that and in several cases over £100.00.

The Upper school pupils, not to be outdone, decided to hold a bucket collection each morning at every entrance gate and in just one week raised well over £1,000.  Additional smaller class based events and solo fund raising efforts have raised additional sums with the final total likely to exceed £10,000.

Mr Jamieson, Head of Lower School, said “The response has been unprecedented.  The pupils have really empathised with the suffering after the Tsunami and were the ones who demanded to have an opportunity to show that they really care.  We would like to publicly thank our pupils, their families and the local community who have given so much to ease the suffering of others.  The pupils are still demanding to do more so we are now looking to the future and hoping to build links with some of the many orphans who have lost everything.  I can’t wait to see what imaginative ideas our youngsters come up with for the longer term”.

The sponsor forms which show a copy of the bank note, the pupils’ photographs and their lists of everything they did to raise such a magnificent sum are now on display, covering all the walls of the lower school hall.  They make fascinating reading and visitors are welcome to visit and celebrate this extraordinary achievement.

Mrs Elizabeth Anne Williams.

Posted: 5th January 2005

It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Elizabeth Williams, who died peacefully on 24th December 2004.  After sustaining a severe spinal injury from a fall at home in July 2003, Elizabeth was unable to return to work and retired in July 2004. She taught Economics and Business at Kingsbury High School for thirty-three years, assisting with the pastoral care of Sixth Form girls before becoming Head of Sixth Form and eventually Director of Studies and Guidance. Elizabeth is remembered with great affection by her many former students, colleagues and friends.

A funeral service will take place at the Breakspeare Crematorium, East Chapel, Ruislip on Wednesday 12th January at 2.00 pm. It was her wish that there should be no flowers but that donations, if wished, to support the work of ASPIRE, should be sent care of T. A. Ellement & Son, 21 Bridge Street, Pinner, HA5 3HR.

A book of condolence will be opened at the School in the main reception of the Princes Avenue building from Monday 10th to Friday 21st January 2005.
